History

    Informal consultations on the formation of of a new Commission to address the gap in management of fisheries issues in the North Pacific Ocean commenced in 2006 and after formal consultations and preparatory conferences the Convention on the Conservation and Management of the High Seas Fisheries Resources in the North Pacific Ocean was adopted on 24th February 2012 and came into force 180 days after receipt of the 4th ratification on 19 July 2015.  Dr. Dae-Yeon Moon was selected to lead the NPFC Secretariat in September 2015.

    In the first two years the NPFC has established a well developed Scientific Committee organization having conducted two full sets of meetings of the Small Scientific Committees for: Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems; North Pacific Armorhead; and  Pacific saury; as well as two Scientific Committee Meetings and a series of two preliminary stock assessment meetings as well as one for chub mackerel.  Further, there have been two Technical and Compliance Committee Meetings, a Special Working Group on Finance and Administration which then lead to the establishment of a formal Finance and Administration Committee as a new subsidiary committee which had its first official meeting in July 2017.

    The NPFC has recently completed its 3rd Commission meeting in Sapporo, Japan in July 2017.

    NPFC Members welcomed two new Members to the fold in 2017, the United States of America on 18 February 2017 and the Republic of Vanuatu on  11 June 2017.
