Identifying effects of environment on Pacific saury recruitment

We investigated environmental effects on the recruitment of Pacific saury (Cololabis saira), using a state space population dynamics model with robust estimation of environmental effects by selecting random effect variance via retrospective forecasting. Among several candidate environmental indices, we found that Kuroshio position index, which explains the position of Kuroshio axis, improved the prediction performance of the Pacific saury recruitment.
