The Commission welcomes its newest Contracting party, the European Union, which became our member effective 23 March 2022.  We look forward to working with the EU and their support in delivering our mandate ‘to ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of the fisheries resources in the Convention Area while protecting the marine ecosystems of the North Pacific Ocean in which these resources occur.’


The NPFC Small Working Group on Management Strategy Evaluation for Pacific Saury (SWG MSE PS) held its first meeting on 21-22 February 2022 to set the stage for MSE for Pacific saury. The NPFC Scientific Committee (SC) and its subsidiary bodies met via video conferencing from 7 to 18 December 2021. The meetings were attended by the NPFC Members (Canada, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, Chinese Taipei, the United States of America and Vanuatu), observers from inter- and non-governmental organizations as well as invited experts.

NPFC officially launches regional VMS

The North Pacific Fisheries Commission officially launched its regional Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) on 10th of August 2021 after years of planning and development by the Commission and its Technical and Compliance Committee.

NPFC HSBI Covid-19 Guidelines

On 31 August 2020, the NPFC TCC Chair circulated a letter to TCC Focal Points and co-leads for the Small Working Group for Operations requesting the collation and comparison of domestic COVID-19 mitigation strategies and policies as they relate to High Seas Boarding and Inspection (HSBI).


Yearbook 2020

The North Pacific Fisheries Commission has released the online version of the fifth yearbook covering the Commission's major activities in 2020.

According to Chairman Vladimir Belyaev: "2020 was a remarkably challenging year to all of us... Despite the difficulties, our Members have maintained their strong commitment to the conservation and management of high seas fisheries resources and protection of marine ecosystems."


COM06 Virtual Meeting

The 6th Annual Meeting of the NPFC took place from 23 to 25 February 2021 by video conferencing, which was chaired by Dr. Vladimir Belyaev (Russia) and preceded by the Technical and Compliance Committee (TCC) Meeting from 18 to 20 February and the Finance and Administration Committee (FAC) Meeting on 21 February.
